Noisy events held at the Rising Sun Public House in Harlesden Road, NW10, over the last few months have led to a large fine for the owners.
On 30 November, Brent Magistrates heard that functions held in the pub had caused significant noise nuisance to local people who could not get to sleep or even open their windows because of the noise.
Despite repeated warnings and a noise abatement notice being served, officers from Brent Council's Environmental Health team heard extremely loud music coming from the pub on four separate occasions over summer this year.
Eight different residents had lodged complaints about the noise coming from the premises and were fed up with the continual disturbance.
On the first occasion the matter was brought to court, the licensee of the pub, Newross Taverns Ltd of Goat Hall Lane, Chelmsford, entered a plea of not guilty and a date was set aside for a full hearing.
However, at the hearing of the case on 30 November, no-one appeared on behalf of the company and the magistrates decided to proceed and deal with the case in their absence.
After hearing detailed evidence from three officers from Environmental Health, the magistrates imposed a fine of £6,000 and costs of £2,955.
Because of the continuous problems, the owners of the pub, Scottish and Newcastle Pub Enterprises, have asked Newross Taverns Ltd to leave the premises and the licence is being transferred to them.
At a separate licence review hearing held on 26 November, the council's Licensing Committee decreed that no entertainment is to be held at the pub until measures to contain the noise and to prevent it being heard outside the premises had been put in place.
David Thrale, Director of Environmental Health, said: "The council supports prosperous local businesses, but this should not be achieved at the expense of neighbours.
"I am pleased that action by Brent Council will likely mean a more peaceful Christmas for neighbours of the Rising Sun." |
