Brent Council gets grant for transport projects PDF Print E-mail

Brent Council has welcomed the decision by Transport for London to grant £4.225 million to implement a number of much-needed transport projects and initiatives across the borough.

Cllr Daniel Brown, Lead Member for Highways and Transportation at Brent Council, said: "I am delighted. That we are once again in the top third of highest-funded boroughs in London is testament to Brent's excellent record on delivering projects which improve the quality of the public realm, improve safety and help address climate change.

"The changes to the annual funding process introduced by Transport for London this year provides much needed flexibility for Brent to take a more joined up, holistic, approach to transport planning.

"I am sure this will bring about real benefits for local people throughout the next financial year and help the council make Brent cleaner, greener and safer.

"The funding will be used to address areas where road casualties are higher than we would like and will ensure we continue to drive down the number of accidents, as well as filling ‘network gaps' in the local bus and cycle networks.

"I would like to add that more funding would have been welcome for the maintenance of the council's major roads, although I appreciate this is governed by London-wide condition surveys and the council is not able to influence the amount of funding it receives for this very important area."

Each borough produces a Local Implementation Plan (LIP) to demonstrate how they plan to implement the Mayor of London's Transport Strategy locally.

Brent's allocation comprises:

  • Maintenance - £622,000 to upgrade the surfaces of road and improve footpaths
  • Corridors - £1.574 million for bus lanes, improving bus stops, cycle lane, road safety
  • Neighbourhoods - £1.148 million to develop 20mph zones, environment, controlled parking zones
  • Smarter Travel - £406,000 to invest in school and workplace travel plans, as well as travel awareness campaigns and cycle training
  • Area Based Schemes - £375,000 for improving access to railway/underground stations in Brent
  • Local Transport Funding - £100,000 for developing community engagement, road safety campaigns and urban realm improvements.
