Brent Council seeks building contractor for new Civic Centre PDF Print E-mail

London Borough of Brent is seeking to appoint a contractor under a design and build contract to finalise the design and build the new Civic Centre within the Wembley regeneration area, opposite Wembley Stadium and Wembley Arena.  A notice has recently been posted under the public sector OJEU procurement process for the contract and can be viewed at www.brent.gov.uk/contracts.nsf .

Closing date for return of the PQQ documentation is 12 February 2010 and the contractor is expected to be appointed by November 2010. It is expected that the new Civic Centre will be completed by the end of 2012 and will act as a catalyst helping to transform the way the council delivers services throughout Brent.

Aktar Choudhury, Civic Centre Programme Director at Brent Council, said: "Brent's new Civic Centre will form an important part of one of UK's most exciting regeneration projects in Wembley in a prominent  setting opposite Wembley Stadium.  We are seeking to create a community centrepiece in the heart of a modern development and determined to build the UK's greenest building - aiming to ro achieve a BREEAM Outstanding rating.  The appointed construction company will help us to deliver a landmark building on time and to budget. which I believe will set the standard for a new generation of Civic Centres where flexibility in space use and sustainability in design and operation is key to reflect changing work patterns, community needs and environmental pressures"

The nine-storey building will accommodate 2,000 staff and councillors and for the first time ever, all Brent Council services will be delivered from one building.  Around half of the building will be used to provide facilities for use by Brent's residents.

These will include a multi-purpose foyer with grand civic steps, a flexible community hall for up to 1,000 people, a new library and learning centre, a winter garden and a smaller Civic Hall with an external terrace and a café and a bigger Registrars Service with a wedding suite and wedding garden.

The building will become a new community centrepiece with key festivals and events in the Brent calendar being celebrated in the public areas throughout the year. The council will continue to work with local people to help shape these public spaces and want to ensure the new building becomes a place of which the whole of Brent can be proud.

Brent Council is also aiming to build the greenest public building in the UK. The latest renewable technologies will be used to reduce both the costs of running the building and its carbon emissions. Some examples of the measures will include water conservation, reducing and recycling waste and using environmentally friendly materials throughout.

London Borough of Brent agreed terms for the purchase of the land from Quintain Estates & Development plc in June 2008 and the new Civic Centre will be situated on a 2.5 acre site on Engineers Way, Wembley.
